Watermen's Experience

If you have already experienced “Chesapeake Gold,” this hands-on program is your opportunity to step into the boots of a Chesapeake waterman and take your oyster ecology knowledge to a new level. You will meet Will, our resident ecologist – who you will remember from “Chesapeake Gold” – at the Marina to board a traditional watermen’s boat. When you push away from the dock, you’ll receive oystering gear designed to keep you (somewhat) dry as you journey along Carter’s Creek hauling up oyster cages from the depths below.

In between oyster hauls, Will will offer a reminder of the history of oystering in the Chesapeake Bay region and the benefits of oysters to the ecosystem. Delving deeper, he’ll discuss in detail the practices of modern oyster aquaculture, including triploid (sterile) oysters, and how farming evolution today allows the enjoyment of eating Eastern oysters year-round. With your oyster cages pulled, you’ll transport your bounty to the sorter back on the Tides shoreline, where you’ll work alongside Will as he runs best husbandry practices. Whether you aspire to farm oysters recreationally, or just want to know the fine points of the craft, consider this your vacation-based, waterfront science lab.
