A Day on Carter's Creek: How to Enjoy Your Time on the Water Before the Season Turns

October 28, 2026

The joy and thrill of a morning spent boating, paddling or simply taking in the scenery on the waters surrounding the Tides Inn doesn’t stop when autumn arrives. Add some layers to your attire to make the most of fall on Carter’s Creek.

Sail Into History

Through October, local Captain “Bull” Kurdziel takes guests on a time-traveling journey back to 1608 when his stories of the legacy of the Rappahannock River begin. His vivid depictions of the region bring history to life alongside the magnificent autumnal scenery during our Mighty Rappahannock outing.

Hire a Captain

If you don’t want to steer your own boat, join one of our captained outings: During the day, our Tidal Cruise takes guests for a scenic ride paired with stories about the region’s history, culture and wildlife. As golden hour approaches, step aboard our wine and cheese cruise to take in the cotton candy sky while nibbling on charcuterie and enjoying a glass of vino.

Play at Your Leisure

Chart your own course on Carter’s Creek by renting a Duffy boat for 90 minutes. Or borrow a complimentary kayak, canoe or paddleboard to explore the waterway at your pace.

Make Art

Fall’s fiery foliage makes an ideal template for watercolorists. Join our Watercolor Cruise for a voyage around Carter’s Creek while a trained artist guides you in creating a masterpiece—whether you’re a practiced artist or a hobbyist.

Walk the Shoreline

Prefer to be adjacent to the water? Stroll our restored Shoreline Trail—the largest living shoreline on the East Coast—which passes our oyster reef and climbs to Sunset Bluff, one of our favorite perches on the property. Signage along the way provides intel on about native plants and species beneath the water’s surface.
