After choosing your favorite type of watercraft, stop by the Tides Inn Marina office for a map of Carter’s Creek, a list of the wildlife you may see around the peninsula and information on guided tours. All kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are complimentary during your stay.
Mah Jongg Camp
Join Mah Jongg expert Dana Lange for an engaging three-day camp filled with hands-on gameplay, strategy and plenty of memorable moments. Whether you’re brand new to the tiles or a seasoned player looking to refine your technique, you’ll enjoy Dana’s signature approach.
ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing
Cultivate a strong foundation of sailing knowledge and skills. Learn sailing terminology, boat parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety, including basic navigation rules, during this two-day class. After, you’ll have the know-how to skipper a sailboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. (The course includes a free, online introductory class.)
Duration: 2 days (7 hours per day)
Two-Hour Sailboat Outing
This two-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River is available four times a day. The trip is for everyone and can be tailored to your comfort level and experience. Pull lines and crank on winches if you are so inclined or simply relax on the bow and take in the scenery.
Tides Inn Farm Tour
Join us for a leisurely bike ride to the Tides Inn Farm to tour our vegetable garden and bee meadow and check out the mushrooms growing along the Forest Trail. Fun fact: Much of the fresh-grown produce you’ll see is destined for Salt & Meadow restaurant.
Mighty Rappahannock
Out on the water, you’ll journey back in time to 1608 where his storied history of the Rappahannock River begins. As the shoreline drifts by, his scope expands to include significant and notable events over the last 400 years.
Watermen's Experience
This work-hard, learn-fast immersive experience gives you a glimpse into a working waterman’s life and the oystering culture of the Chesapeake Bay. Cocktail Boat Racing
After nearly a decade away from Virginia waters, this iconic event is finally returning. On May 9, the Tides Inn proudly welcomes back Cocktail Boat Racing with the inaugural Tidewater Cup, bringing racers, spectators, and shoreline cheers to Carter’s Creek for a day fueled by adrenaline and coastal camaraderie.
ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising
Build upon the skills taught in the 101 course. During this multi-day class, you’ll learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

Sail & Savor–A Trip to Merroir
Come aboard for a ride to Locklies Creek. We’ll arrive at the Merroir Tasting Room, a waterfront restaurant that doubles as a tasting room for the Rappahannock River Oyster Company. Everything on the menu is freshly harvested and served either raw or cooked on an outdoor grill. Enjoy craft brews and wine pairings before a leisurely sail back to the Tides.
Chesapeake Gold—An Oyster Experience
Eastern oysters are a keystone species of the Chesapeake Bay that help to purify the water. During this small-group outing, visit an oyster farm, pull up oyster cages and help sort the catch. Back on shore, practice grading oysters for size and quality and learn how to grill them—before digging in yourself.
ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising
Cultivate the skills necessary for a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring/mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather and more. Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring your textbook, parallel ruler and a set of dividers (for chart plotting) to class, along with layers to keep warm, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat.

Enjoy the bay's natural beauty from the deck of a sailing catamaran. Hop on catamaran Pisces and depart in the late afternoon. We will set sail and watch the sun dip below the horizon as you enjoy the glow of the Rappahannock River. Three-Hour Catamaran Sail
A three-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River that departs at 9am and 1pm daily. This trip is great for anyone wanting to get out on the water and experience sailing on the Rive. Pull lines and crank on winches if you feel so inclined, or simply relax on the bow taking in the scenery or reading a book.
Cedar Island Trip
Spend the night aboard our 36-foot sailboat, Galene. We’ll anchor just off the Chesapeake Bay, next to a sandy beach. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including weather forecasting, route planning, sailing, navigation and anchoring. A maximum of three people can join; you’ll overnight in either the private cabin or a single aft bunk.

Moonlight Sailboat Cruise
See the water in a whole new light: moonlight. For two days each month, the full moon lights up the river with an ethereal glow, creating a truly spectacular and unique sight. Our specially outfitted sailing vessel, Galene, departs just before sunset, using the moon as a guide for this two-hour outing.

Beautiful Swimmers - A Blue Crab Experience
Blue crabs are an icon of the region and critical to maintaining balance in the natural ecosystem. This is your chance to get up-close with the shellfish: Learn how to set a crab pot while on the water, then get tips for prepping, cooking and, yes, eating the delicious local delicacy. *This experience is offered seasonally.
Oyster Shucking
Join our ecologist, Will, for this raw culinary experience. You’ll be introduced to the history of oystering in the Chesapeake Bay region, the modern aquaculture of the Eastern Oyster, and the safe techniques of oyster shucking. While you shuck, learn why the flavors of oysters vary according to where they’re harvested and the temperature of the water. At the end of your feast, we invite you to contribute to our restoration efforts by adding the empty oyster shells to our Living Shoreline.
Watercolors & Mimosas Cruise
Our resident artist will take their art lessons on the water: As you cruise Carter’s Creek - gaining inspiration from the resident wildlife and lush scenery - they outline the basics of watercolor painting. Create your own masterpiece, then celebrate with a mimosa.
Guided Bike Tour
Enjoy a 1-hour guided bike tour at our Woodland Trail, with a guide provided by the Tides Inn. Please meet in the front lobby and dress appropriately for the weather.
Leisurely Bike Ride
