ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing

Cultivate a strong foundation of sailing knowledge and skills. Learn sailing terminology, boat parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety, including basic navigation rules, during this two-day class. After, you’ll have the know-how to skipper a sailboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. (The course includes a free, online introductory class.)

Duration: 2 days (7 hours per day)

Two-Hour Sailboat Outing

This two-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River is available four times a day. The trip is for everyone and can be tailored to your comfort level and experience. Pull lines and crank on winches if you want or simply relax on the bow and take in the scenery.

Tides Inn Farm Tour

Join our resident horticulturist, Matt Little, for a leisurely bike ride to the Tides Inn Farm to tour our vegetable garden and bee meadow and check out the mushrooms growing along the Forest Trail. Fun fact: Much of the fresh-grown produce you’ll see is destined for Salt & Meadow restaurant.

ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising

Build upon the skills taught in the 101 course. During this multi-day class, you’ll learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

Duration: 3 days (7 hours per day)

Chesapeake Gold—An Oyster Experience

Eastern oysters are a keystone species of the Chesapeake Bay that help to purify the water. During this small-group outing, visit an oyster farm, pull up oyster cages and help sort the catch. Back on shore, practice grading oysters for size and quality and learn how to grill them—before digging in yourself.

ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising

Cultivate the skills necessary for a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring/mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather and more. Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring your textbook, parallel ruler and a set of dividers (for chart plotting) to class, along with layers to keep warm, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat.

Duration: 3 days (7 hours per day)

Master Class & Tasting: Wine

Led by our wine expert you will learn about the uniqueness and popularity of wine varietals as you swirl and sip your way to demystifying the terminology and vinification of grapes.

Chesapeake Circle

Explore the lower Chesapeake Bay with a professional captain, aboard our 36’ monohaul Galene. This 3-day sailing trip is a blend of hands-on learning and fun-filled adventure. Along the way you will see historic lighthouses, explore charming coastal towns and spend each night at a marina in a seaside town.

Catamaran Sail on the Bay

Enjoy the bay's natural beauty from the deck of a sailing catamaran. You can choose to actively participate in sailing or simply unwind on the expansive deck, taking in panoramic views and the refreshing bay breeze. You can also have the opportunity to swim, adding more adventure to your experience.

Catamaran Sunset Cruise

Hop on catamaran Pisces and depart in the late afternoon. We will set sail and watch the sun dip below the horizon as you enjoy the glow of the Rappahannock River. There’s nothing for you to do except kick back and take in the serene beauty. This is coastal living at its best! This trip is good for those who want to spend a relaxing evening with friends and family out on the water.

Three-Hour Catamaran Sail

A three-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River that departs at 10am and 2pm daily. This trip is great for anyone wanting to get out on the water and experience sailing on the Rive. Pull lines and crank on winches if you want, or simply relax on the bow taking in the scenery or reading a book.

Cedar Island Trip

Spend the night aboard our 36-foot sailboat, Galene. We’ll anchor just off the Chesapeake Bay, next to a sandy beach. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including weather forecasting, route planning, sailing, navigation and anchoring. A maximum of three people can join; you’ll overnight in either the private cabin or a single aft bunk.

Moonlight Sailboat Cruise

See the water in a whole new light: moonlight. For two days each month, the full moon lights up the river with an ethereal glow, creating a truly spectacular and unique sight. Our specially outfitted sailing vessel, Galene, departs just before sunset, using the moon as a guide for this two-hour outing.

Sail & Savor–A Trip to Merroir

Lunch and sailing: the perfect pairing. Come onboard for a ride on the Rappahannock River during which we’ll sail under the iconic Robert O. Norris Bridge to Locklies Creek. We’ll arrive at the Merroir Tasting Room, a waterfront restaurant that doubles as the tasting room for the Rappahannock River Oyster Company, just in time for lunch. Everything on the menu is freshly harvested and served either raw or cooked on an outdoor grill. Beautiful Swimmers—A Blue Crab Experience

Blue crabs are an icon of the Chesapeake Bay (their scientific name translates to “beautiful swimmer”) and critical to maintaining balance in the natural ecosystem. This is your chance to get up-close with the shellfish: Alongside resident ecologist Will Smiley, learn how to set a crab pot while on the water, then get tips for prepping, cooking and, yes, eating the delicious local delicacy.

Urbanna Whiskey Run

Join us for a unique boat excursion to historic Urbanna, a charming waterfront town founded in 1680. During this three to six-hour outing, you can visit local shops, explore historic sites and enjoy the “Museum in the Street” tour, all under the guidance of one of our experienced captains. The trip is tailored to your preferences, and you’ll have the option to stay in the area to dine or enjoy a cocktail.

Watercolors & Mimosas Cruise

Resident artist Theresa Schneveis takes her art lessons on the water: As you cruise Carter’s Creek—gaining inspiration from the resident wildlife and lush scenery—she’ll outline the basics of watercolor painting. Create your own masterpiece, then celebrate with a mimosa.

Bird Exploration

Our on-site expert will lead you through our Forest Trail, Bee Meadow and Shoreline Trail with all the tools you need to learn about our local fowl. This experience is outdoors and includes walking for a significant portion of the tour. Guests should be prepared with proper footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.

Beehive Experience

Explore a day in the life of an apiarist with our beekeeping experience. After a short walk through the Forest Trail to the Bee Meadow, you will meet with our resident beekeeper for a brief introduction on the most vital pollinators, the European honeybee. Opening your eyes to how it feels to be inside an apiary, the beekeeper teaches you about the extraordinary life of the honeybee. This workshop will conclude with a honey tasting of local, raw honey. *This experience is offered seasonally.

Painting and Pinot

Join our artist, Theresa, as she guides you through the process of painting with acrylics. Enjoy a charcuterie board while sipping on wine. All talent levels are welcome.

Pottery on the Wheel

Our resident artist, Theresa, will guide you step-by-step to master the wheel as you make your own unique ceramic piece. Class includes two pieces to be glazed, fired and shipped.

Tides Inn Farm Tour

Join our resident horticulturist, Matt Little, for a leisurely bike ride to the Tides Inn Farm to tour our vegetable garden and bee meadow and check out the mushrooms growing along the Forest Trail. Fun fact: Much of the fresh-grown produce you’ll see is destined for Salt & Meadow restaurant.

Bird Exploration

Our on-site expert will lead you through our Forest Trail, Bee Meadow and Shoreline Trail with all the tools you need to learn about our local fowl. This experience is outdoors and includes walking for a significant portion of the tour. Guests should be prepared with proper footwear and clothing suitable for the weather.

Master Class & Tasting: Wine

Led by our wine expert you will learn about the uniqueness and popularity of wine varietals as you swirl and sip your way to demystifying the terminology and vinification of grapes.

Shoreline Tour

Join our team for a complimentary walk along our Shoreline Trail. Our restoration project will deepen our connection to Carter’s Creek and the greater Chesapeake Bay region.

Bird Exploration Cruise

Become a citizen scientist: Join resident horticulturist Matt Little for a casual cruise around Carter’s Creek to spot and identify the myriad bird and plant species in the area, including herons and ospreys.

Nature’s Art

Create a textured mixed media collage using items found in the Chesapeake Bay region including driftwood, oyster shells and dried flowers.

Painting and Pinot

Join our artist, Theresa, as she guides you through the process of painting with acrylics. Enjoy a charcuterie board while sipping on wine. All talent levels are welcome.

Guided Bike Tour

Enjoy a 1-hour guided bike tour with Tides Inn Resident Ecologist, Will Smiley along our Woodland Trail. Please meet in the front lobby and dress appropriately for the weather.

Pottery on the Wheel

Our resident artist, Theresa, will guide you step-by-step to master the wheel as you make your own unique ceramic piece. Class includes two pieces to be glazed, fired and shipped.

Leisurely Ride

Hop on one of our bicycles and enjoy a leisurely ride around the historic town of Irvington.

Master Class & Tasting: Champagne

Join our Sommelier, Megan, as she guides you through a Champagne Master Class and Tasting, delving into the nuances of various champagnes, from their notes and origins to perfect pairings and beyond.

Bespoke Mugs—A Clay Handbuilding Class

With help from our resident artist, Theresa Schneveis, design and craft your own bespoke mug through the process of handbuilding, or creating pottery without a wheel. Add a personalized touch by pressing locally foraged plant pieces into your clay for texture or decoration—and a reminder of the natural beauty of the Tides Inn.

Total Body Sculpt

This class will increase flexibility, and muscular stamina, and get the blood flowing without the use of heavy weights or equipment. This is an ideal class for anyone healing from muscular injuries, in need of flexibility training, or just looking for a good calorie burn.

Move your yoga practice onto the water. After a 10- to 15-minute paddle to our destination, you’ll float through a corefocused, flow yoga class. Open to all levels of yoga and paddling experience
