ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing

Cultivate a strong foundation of sailing knowledge and skills. Learn sailing terminology, boat parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety, including basic navigation rules, during this two-day class. After, you’ll have the know-how to skipper a sailboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. (The course includes a free, online introductory class.)

Duration: 2 days (7 hours per day)

Two-Hour Sailboat Outing

This two-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River is available four times a day. The trip is for everyone and can be tailored to your comfort level and experience. Pull lines and crank on winches if you are so inclined or simply relax on the bow and take in the scenery.

Tides Inn Farm Tour

Join Farmer Patrick for a guided ride aboard our electric vehicle to the Tides Farm, where he’ll share a brief history of farming in the Northern Neck and on the Tides’ land.

Trails of Tides

While a guest at our resort, we invite you to connect with nature on three trails: Shoreline Trail, Woodland Trail and Forest Trail. You will find a copy of our map in your guest room. The concierge will be happy to provide you with extra copies.

Watermen's Experience

This work-hard, learn-fast immersive experience gives you a glimpse into a working waterman’s life and the oystering culture of the Chesapeake Bay. Cocktail Boat Racing

After nearly a decade away from Virginia waters, this iconic event is finally returning. On May 9, the Tides Inn proudly welcomes back Cocktail Boat Racing with the inaugural Tidewater Cup, bringing racers, spectators, and shoreline cheers to Carter’s Creek for a day fueled by adrenaline and coastal camaraderie. 

Customized Charter Flights

ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising

Build upon the skills taught in the 101 course. During this multi-day class, you’ll learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

Sail & Savor–A Trip to Merroir

Come aboard for a ride to Locklies Creek. We’ll arrive at the Merroir Tasting Room, a waterfront restaurant that doubles as a tasting room for the Rappahannock River Oyster Company. Everything on the menu is freshly harvested and served either raw or cooked on an outdoor grill. Enjoy craft brews and wine pairings before a leisurely sail back to the Tides.

Chesapeake Gold—An Oyster Experience

Eastern oysters are a keystone species of the Chesapeake Bay that help to purify the water. During this small-group outing, visit an oyster farm, pull up oyster cages and help sort the catch. Back on shore, practice grading oysters for size and quality and learn how to grill them—before digging in yourself.

Get ready to take command on this hands-on powerboat experience designed to build real confidence on the water. Guests of all ages and experience levels (even kids) take the helm and learn to safely operate a powerboat with one of our experienced captains.

ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising

Cultivate the skills necessary for a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring/mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather and more. Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring your textbook, parallel ruler and a set of dividers (for chart plotting) to class, along with layers to keep warm, a water bottle, sunscreen and a hat.

As part of our renovation, we created the largest living shoreline on the East Coast, replacing bulkheads with native grasses and oyster shell to reduce erosion, improve water quality and create habitat.

This excursion takes you to the Cape Charles Seaplane Base for a unique coastal experience. Once there, you may enjoy seaside dining, shopping and exploration of one of Virginia’s most charming coastal towns.

Explore the lower Chesapeake Bay with a professional captain, aboard our 36’ monohaul Galene. This 3-day sailing trip is a blend of hands-on learning and fun-filled adventure. Along the way you will see historic lighthouses, explore charming coastal towns and spend each night at a marina in a seaside town.

Catamaran Sail on the Bay

Enjoy the bay's natural beauty from the deck of a sailing catamaran. You can choose to actively participate in sailing or simply unwind on the expansive deck, taking in panoramic views and the refreshing bay breeze. You can also have the opportunity to swim, adding more adventure to your experience.

Catamaran Sunset Cruise

Hop on catamaran Pisces and depart in the late afternoon. We will set sail and watch the sun dip below the horizon as you enjoy the glow of the Rappahannock River. There’s nothing for you to do except kick back and take in the serene beauty. This is coastal living at its best! This trip is good for those who want to spend a relaxing evening with friends and family out on the water.

Three-Hour Catamaran Sail

A three-hour sailing excursion on the Rappahannock River that departs at 9am and 1pm daily. This trip is great for anyone wanting to get out on the water and experience sailing on the Rive. Pull lines and crank on winches if you feel so inclined, or simply relax on the bow taking in the scenery or reading a book.

Cedar Island Trip

Spend the night aboard our 36-foot sailboat, Galene. We’ll anchor just off the Chesapeake Bay, next to a sandy beach. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including weather forecasting, route planning, sailing, navigation and anchoring. A maximum of three people can join; you’ll overnight in either the private cabin or a single aft bunk.

Moonlight Sailboat Cruise

See the water in a whole new light: moonlight. For two days each month, the full moon lights up the river with an ethereal glow, creating a truly spectacular and unique sight. Our specially outfitted sailing vessel, Galene, departs just before sunset, using the moon as a guide for this two-hour outing.

Best of the Atlantic Flyway

Glide along quiet waterways within the Atlantic Flyway - one of North America’s most vital migration corridors, where millions of birds depend on these coastal habitats to rest and feed. Led by an expert naturalist, you’ll experience this remarkable journey from the water, up close.

Beautiful Swimmers - A Blue Crab Experience

Alongside our resident ecologist, Will, you’ll board a boat and head into Carter’s Creek. Out on the water, you’ll learn about the history of crabbing and the crab itself. You’ll get hands-on as you learn how to set and pull crab pots and evaluate which crabs can be captured and which must be thrown back.

Oyster Shucking

Join our ecologist, Will, for this raw culinary experience. You’ll be introduced to the history of oystering in the Chesapeake Bay region, the modern aquaculture of the Eastern Oyster, and the safe techniques of oyster shucking. While you shuck, learn why the flavors of oysters vary according to where they’re harvested and the temperature of the water. At the end of your feast, we invite you to contribute to our restoration efforts by adding the empty oyster shells to our Living Shoreline.

Mighty Rappahannock

A treasured local captain and raconteur, Captain Bull will be your guide and historian for the morning. Cruise to Stingray Point aboard the Lil’ Tip-Sea and along the way he will share the history of the Rappahannock River over the last 400 years, including early native inhabitants, European exploration and Captain John Smith.

Farm to Fork

An artful salad is an endeavor that unites farm and kitchen. Join our farmer in harvesting seasonal produce and herbs, then get hands-on with our chefs in the kitchen - from washing and drying to mincing and tossing. Finish with learning to balance the perfect vinaigrette.

Shoreline Tour

Join our team for a complimentary walk along our Shoreline Trail. Our restoration project will deepen our connection to Carter’s Creek and the greater Chesapeake Bay region.

Pasta Making

Does pasta taste just a little bit better in your favorite restaurant than when you make it at home? Gain insights into the best-kept restaurant chef secrets from our culinary team at Salt & Meadow. Get hands-on as you learn to make pasta from scratch with traditional ingredients, including fresh eggs and Italian chef's flour. Clay Handbuilding Class

Duffy Boat Rental

Chart your own course on Carter's Creek aboard a Duffy boat. A 90-minute rental offers freedom and privacy as you captain your own journey. Because these boats are operable by guests instead of requiring a captain, they allow you an opportunity for freedom and privacy.

Christ Church

Completed in 1735, this Virginia historical landmark is the best preserved of Colonial Virginia’s Anglican parish churches. The Christ Church features history of the church and Robert “King” Carter. Ride one of our complimentary bikes to the church or inquire about resort transportation. Advance tour appointments are recommended.

Created to preserve, educate and interpret the era of the steamboats that plied the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Urbanna Museum and Visitors Center

Built in 1766, the James Mill Scottish Factor Store is one of America’s oldest surviving mercantile buildings tied to the tobacco trade at Urbanna Creek. Scottish factors transformed commerce here by offering planters immediate cash or credit for tobacco in exchange for imported goods. Inside, view the original 1755 John Mitchell Map - often called “the most important map in American history”—along with exhibits honoring Urbanna’s rich oyster heritage. Today, the building serves as the Visitor Center for the Town of Urbanna and Middlesex County.

Wellness Workshop will be an educational presentation on a chosen topic that is relevant to wellness. From hydration, macro nutrients, simple meals and the dos and don’ts or cravings, the list of topics are endless and will rotate depending on the relevance of the season. $50 per person

Private Training: Cardio & Strength*

With a capacity of only two guests, Cardio & Strength is a personalized, fast-paced workout that combines the benefits of cardiovascular and strength training. These two elements will help your body build muscle, endurance, and metabolic strength. The workout will be bouts of intermittent cardio in conjunction with weightlifting and body weight movements. We will begin and end with a cool down segment as well. $100 per person. Please book 24 hours in advance
