Legacy Boat Building
For generations, small boats have shaped life along the Chesapeake Bay – born from ingenuity, necessity and a deep connection to the water. As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, we honor the spirit of those early makers by continuing their craft here, carrying this enduring tradition forward.
Beginning May 21 & 22 and continuing each Thursday and Friday from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM and 1:30 PM–3:30 PM, settle into the rhythm of Chesapeake boatbuilding as you work with wood, hand and tide. Guided by Captain Bill England- who grew up along the Bay and has spent years building classic vessels, including “Nutshells” and a Cocktail Class Racer – you’ll take part in a hands-on experience rooted in both heritage and craft.
Over the course of the season, a new vessel will take shape – one defined not only by technique, but by the people who helped bring it to life. At summer’s end (timing dependent on weather and build progress), you’ll be invited to return for its official launch and christening, a shared moment that marks the culmination of the journey.
Join for one session or many, and your contribution becomes part of something lasting. Your name will be engraved within the vessel itself – a permanent mark of your role in its story. Season after season, you’re invited to return and enjoy complimentary use of the boat during future stays at the Tides Inn, reconnecting with a craft that continues to evolve while honoring where it began.
